The main male line or “chiefly” line of Clan Campbell a descended from the Knights of Lochow (Lochawe) and later became the “ducal” line, the line of the Earls and Dukes of Argyll.
Traditionally it has been thought that these are male line descendants of a Chief or a progenitor of a surname. However, modern Next Generation Sequencing DNA technology is revealing to us what has always been known about clans in general, namely that a clan is a melting pot of related and unrelated families.
Another thing to keep in mind that that the list includes lairds or “heritable proprietors of land”, which in turn had tenants of more families on those lands, sometimes named Campbell as well, sometimes not, that are not included in this list.
Lastly, the use of “in” vs “of” in Scotland. Through conversations with Duncan Beaton, the administrator of The Clan Campbell Society Facebook Group, when they refer to a person as being “of” a place it is generally meant to indicate that they were the Laird or proprietor. If they refer to someone as being “in” a place it is simply meant that they were tenants of the Laird, or lived at the place. This distinction of missing in the United States for instance. We would do well to try to remember this distinction when building our genealogical trees.
