The Campbells of Duntroon have been found to be one of those melting pot families that make up Clan Campbell. What that means is that they have been found to not be recently related to the Clan chiefly line (aka Argyll) and it’s descendants despite what the clan genealogies have claimed. What has not yet been determined is whether or not this was always the case. There are slight indications that Campbells of Duntroon may have as many as three incarnations. Here we are only referring to the current or last incarnation.
Tradition has it that the Campbells of Duntroon are supposed to have descended from Duncan Mor of Glenshira, a son of Colin Iongantach. The haplogroup expectation for such a relationship would be R-BY58693 because we have kits from descendants of Dougall Mor of Dunstaffnage and Lord Duncan Na-Adh that have both tested as such. Duntroon does not have that mutation and cannot be descended from the same. In fact they are found to be downstream of R-L513 which i a completely different branch of the Y-DNA tree. In this regard they join the Campbells of Glenorchy (R-S744) starting with Sir Duncan 2nd of Glenorchy and the Campbells of Succoth (R-M222 est).
Expected haplogroup: R-FTA1655
