According to some ancient accounts the Clan Tavish – not, be it noted, the Clan MacTavish – descend from Taius or Tavis Coir, illegitimate son of Colin Maol Math, again by some accounts, great-great-grandfather of Sir Cailean Mor. Tavis Coir was said to be a man of great courage and valour, who conquered Cowal from the Lamonts. BigY DNA testing has shown there is truth to this legend, and moreso that the chiefly line of Clan MacTavish belongs to this “Campbell” haplogroup. The bigger surprise was the close relationship with the cadet line of Inverawe! This group is devoted to sorting out which MacTavish lines are related to Campbell and which are not. The situation is *not* unprecedented within the Project. (See MacArthur-Campbells of Strachur and the so-called MacDougall-Campbells of Craignish. None of these families have any relation to Clan MacArthur/Arthur, or Clan MacDougall). What is being revealed in all three of these cases is that each clan is indeed a melting pot of related and unrelated families, the DNA speaks for itself as to the truth of the matter.
