"in 1833 he made his first appearence in public life as Attorney General of Tenn. 1835 he was a representative in the Legislature; in 1836, resigned and as Capt. led a company in Florida war against the Seminole Indians. In 1837 he was elected to Congress, and served as a Representative for 6 years. In 1843, at the close of his last term in Congress, he retired from politics. In 1846 he embarked in the war with Mexico as Col. of the 1st Regiment of Tenn. volunteers, and in that capacity served with distinction until the close of the war. Upon his return home, he was appointed Judge of the Circuit Court in his district, which position he held several years. In 1851 he was nominated by acclamation as the Whig candidate for Governor, and was elected to that office....... In 1861, Gov. Campbell opposed secession and remained true in his devotion to the Union. In 1862, when the Federal Army occupied Nashville and a military government was established, he returned to the seat of government and gave his moral support to the Union cause. In 1865 he took an active part in reorganizing the State government, and was again elected to the U. S. Congress."

212 Bruce Campbell writes: Duncan married Harriet Young and they had 6 children as well. He was left an inheritance which he seemed to have parlayed into owning plantations in Granada, Tobago and Jamaica retiring in later years to a comfortable life style in New Bedford, London. Their 2nd son (4th child) built the estate house at Ardanaiseig, Scotland now an exclusive Scottish Hotel and their 3rd son (5th child), Major Thomas Edmund Campbell CB built the Manoir House at St. Hilaire, Quebec.(CCSNA, AGM 2001) . Campbell, Duncan of Bedford Square (I0948)

217 Burkes Peerage 1934 identifies the above sons and daughters. It is slightly confusing inasmuch as it introduces the children by the 2nd marriage as "with four daus." which might imply that there were 4 daughters other than those identified as above or it might just mean those 4 daughters. This is relevant because TSP (Breadalbane) identifies the following Elizabeth as "daughter of Patrick Dow More Campbell of Edinchip, who was a natural son of Sir Duncan Campbell, seventh of Glenurchy, legitimated 10 April 1616". That seems to be the same Patrick as the first on this page whom BP1934 (Campbell of Barcaldine) introduces as "Patrick Campbell, known as Para dubh beag ... natural son of Sir Duncan Campbell, 1st Bart of Glenorchy" ... who was legitimated 1614 and who "obtained, from his father, Innerzeldies, and other lands in Perthshire". However, it is very strange that the marriage of a daughter with Sir John of Glenorchy would not be recorded when other less prestigious marriages were. The following connection must therefore be considered insecure. Noting that Elizabeth was Sir John's 2nd wife, it is possible that this Elizabeth was one of the above daughters and this was her 2nd marriage. Campbell, Elizabeth (I4827)

229 Cashier of the Royal Bank. Descended it is stated from the House of Breadalbane (Scots Peerage)

Tom von Weissenberg ( tomvw@nic.fi (priv), tom.von.weissenberg@iki.fi ) writes:

I know for sure that John Campbell of the Bank (1705 - 1777) is my ancestor, no doubt a DNA test would proof that far. What we know is that Johns parents were Colin of Ardmaddy and Grizelda Douglas of Kent. According to family tradition they were married and had a son. That can, however, not be established from official records, because no records exists to confirm such marriage ever took place. On the other hand, after his father Colin's death at the age of 29 'without legal issue' John was taken from his mother Grizelda, brought up and educated by grandfather John, 1st Earl of Breadalbane, In all records or biographies of John of the Bank, he is said to belong to the noble Breadalbane Campbells. For me it is unbelievable that he could have risen to the position of First Cashier (CEO of today) of RBS without support from a powerful family. Another evidence for the relation. But, lacking official records, he remains a bastard, regardless of a DNA test.
