James Campbell, 8th of Lawers, retoured heir to his half brother James Campbell on 12 July, 1703, and is then styled as "son by a second marriage of James Campbell of Lawers." He was murdered in his sleep by Duncan Campbell of Edramuckie while asleep in lodgings in Greenock on 22 April, 1723.
