  • Notes
    • Cashier of the Royal Bank. Descended it is stated from the House of Breadalbane (Scots Peerage)

      Tom von Weissenberg ( tomvw@nic.fi (priv), tom.von.weissenberg@iki.fi ) writes:

I know for sure that John Campbell of the Bank (1705 - 1777) is my ancestor, no doubt a DNA test would proof that far. What we know is that Johns parents were Colin of Ardmaddy and Grizelda Douglas of Kent. According to family tradition they were married and had a son. That can, however, not be established from official records, because no records exists to confirm such marriage ever took place. On the other hand, after his father Colin's death at the age of 29 'without legal issue' John was taken from his mother Grizelda, brought up and educated by grandfather John, 1st Earl of Breadalbane, In all records or biographies of John of the Bank, he is said to belong to the noble Breadalbane Campbells. For me it is unbelievable that he could have risen to the position of First Cashier (CEO of today) of RBS without support from a powerful family. Another evidence for the relation. But, lacking official records, he remains a bastard, regardless of a DNA test.

John Campbell of the Citadel. Writer to the Signet, Deputy Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, First Cashier of Royal Bank of Scotland.
